About

NextGen Biomedical Informatics (BMI), as part of the NextGen Precision Health Initiative and Data Science and Analytics Innovation Center (dSAIC), provides informatics expertise and capabilities to support translational and clinical researchers at all four University of Missouri System campuses, affiliated organizations and external partner organizations.

The methods and tools developed and maintained by BMI allow our research collaborators and clients to store, integrate, query, analyze and visualize complex data sets. NextGen BMI works closely with the MU Health Care and partner health systems in making clinical data available for research.

NextGen BMI unites faculty and staff from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Missouri to leverage the capabilities of public-private partnerships such as the Tiger Institute for Health Innovation. We are dedicated to developing and leveraging innovative informatics solutions and artificial intelligence and to advancing reproducible science by leading and participating in national research network collaborations.

Our research is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Center for Disease Control (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and other funding agencies.

Philosophy

Our goal is to improve health care and advance biomedical discovery through biomedical informatics.

NextGen BMI offers services to investigators and organizations within and outside the University of Missouri System on grant-funded, chargeback-based projects, and other collaborative funding models for developing/deploying/supporting applications, as well as integrating and exploring health data produced by clinical, administrative, quality and biomedical research systems. Our team strives to provide cost-effective, scalable, open solutions that can be deployed within the NextGen environment or your organization’s IT infrastructure, or utilize cloud computing platforms — maximizing the portability and impact of our methods to advance biomedical informatics.

Informatics is at its best when we provide systems, training, consultation or collaboration that allows your research to grow in new directions that were cost-prohibitive or not possible before. Our approach also helps health-care providers and systems understand their care processes and quality, and create a learning health-care system

We want to be your partner: Informatics is not a spectator sport. When you engage with our team, it helps us devise new solutions to advance state of the art in biomedical informatics. Similarly, training and collaboration with our team can help your research or organizational clinical effectiveness.

We know you’re busy: We are also happy when researchers use our informatics systems as independent, informatics-savvy investigators and don’t require training, consultation and collaboration.
